Understanding Pet Care in California

California’s large urban population means many pet parents face high demand for veterinary services, especially in major metro areas.

Appointment availability can be limited, making early guidance helpful when concerns arise. The state’s mild climate allows parasites like fleas to stay active year-round, so preventive care is often ongoing rather than seasonal. Veterinary costs also tend to be higher in urban regions, which makes proactive care and informed decision-making especially important.

What this means for California pet parents:

  • Plan ahead for non-urgent concerns, as same-week appointments may be limited
  • Expect parasite prevention to be ongoing, not just a summer task
  • Monitor pets closely after outdoor activities, especially in coastal or warm regions
  • Seek guidance early when symptoms are mild, to help avoid rushed decisions later

Pet Ownership & Health Considerations for Californians

Local Pet Laws & Ownership Rules

  • Pet limits vary by municipality. California does not impose a single statewide cap on the number of pets you may own; however, many cities and counties limit households to a specific number of dogs or cats (commonly three to five). Local ordinances apply, so it’s important to check city or county regulations.

  • Dog licensing is required statewide.

  • Microchipping is strongly encouraged and often required.

Climate-Related Health Risks

  • Heat-related illness is a significant concern. High temperatures—especially in Southern California and inland regions—increase the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke in pets.

  • Parasites are present year-round in many areas. Fleas and ticks can remain active throughout much of California due to its mild climate.

  • Wildfire smoke exposure matters.

Beach & Outdoor Safety

  • Beach access rules vary widely. Always follow posted signage and local regulations.

  • Watch for environmental hazards. Hot sand, sharp shells, strong currents, and occasional harmful algal blooms can pose risks to pets.

Exotic & Non-Traditional Pets

  • California has some of the strictest exotic-animal laws in the U.S.

  • Permits may be required. Certain animals—particularly native wildlife, some reptiles, and specific bird species—require special permits from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

You can always send your images directly to our email account [email protected]. Just remember to write down your name and the name of your pet.

How do I prepare for the PangoVet consultation call?

It’s easy to prepare for your consultation. Just have your device ready.

You can join the video call from your phone, computer, or tablet.

When possible, we recommend finding a quiet area without a lot of background noise or distraction. You may choose to have your pet accompany you on all, part, or none of the call, but our vets may request to see them depending on the nature of the call.

General Consultation

How do I join the PangoVet consultation call?

Simply click the link we email you! When your appointment starts, your vet will admit you into the private virtual consultation.

PangoVet uses a secure, browser-based video platform – no downloads required!

You can join the PangoVet video call on your mobile, computer, or tablet.

General Consultation

Do I need to have my video on for the consultation?

No, you do not need to use the video feature in your virtual vet consultation. If you prefer, you can use only audio, though we do recommend you use your video for if your pet is present so we can offer you the best, most comprehensive support.

General Consultation

What can I expect during the call?

Our vets will ask you various questions pertaining to your specific concerns stated in your booking form. They will offer advice, or triage, and can help guide you through whatever the next steps are!

General Booking

Can PangoVet issue prescriptions?

No. Prescribing generally requires an in-person veterinary client-patient relationship, which generally means a vet is in the same country and state as you.

While our service does not currently support prescriptions, our team of vets can guide you through the process of why your pet may or may not need medication, what tests you may want to seek from an in-clinic vet prior to issuing the prescription, and the costs associated with the process. We can even help you find a vet local to you to assist you further!

General Booking

Should I go to the vet, or should I do a PangoVet teleadvice call?

For questions about your pets health, including advice on nutrition, behavior, training, or general medical advice, we are here to help! We offer peace of mind, and can guide you through the process of how to best help your pet, and the actionable steps you can take to keep them happy and healthy!

But, PangoVet is not a substitute for an in-person veterinary exam. If your pet is experiencing any life-threatening or emergency situation, please contact a local veterinarian.

General Booking

Do you need to see the medical records of my pet?

No, at PangoVet we don’t need your pet’s medical records to have a video call with you and your pet. The more information you can provide us, the better, but it is not necessary for us to have medical records in order to help you and your pet.

General Booking Consultation

How can PangoVet help my pet?

Our service provides veterinary advice, guidance, and triage. We are well-suited to help with your questions on pet health, nutrition, behavior, and non-urgent illnesses. We have the time to discuss your questions in depth, which cannot always happen during an in-person clinic visit.

We can also help you decide when and how urgently a trip to your vet clinic is necessary. And if needed, we can help you find a local vet, if you don’t already have one.

General Booking

What services does PangoVet not provide?

Our vets cannot perform physical tests, make a diagnosis, or prescribe medications.

We can provide veterinary advice, guidance, and help you prepare action plans for your pet for health, nutrition, behavioral, and non-urgent illness needs.

General Booking

What regions is PangoVet not able to provide services to?

At this time we are unfortunately not able to provide PangoVet services to customers in the following regions:

  • Canadian province of Ontario

  • Canadian province of British Columbia

This is because of legislation in the above-mentioned regions. We are hoping that they change their legislation soon so that we can provide our services to customers in those regions.

General Booking

What should I do if I have more than one pet?

We love extended furry families! If you have questions on more than one pet, please book a separate consultation for each pet, so that we have the time to discuss each pet with the individual attention they deserve.

General Booking

Why do I need to book in advance? Can I do an instant consultation?

We take advance bookings to allow us to best prepare for your consultation, and to best serve as many pets as possible.

We find this also helps pet parents prepare for and find suitable times for their consultations around their own busy schedules. If a time you would like is not listed, it may be due to our veterinarians helping out other pets and their parents.

Please be reminded that if the nature of your call is an emergency, PangoVet is not a substitute for in-clinic veterinary care. If it is an emergency, please contact your vet immediately.

General Booking

What if I can’t find a slot that suits me? Can I book a consultation at a different time?

Of course. Just email us at [email protected] with your preferred time and we will do our best to accommodate your request.

General Booking

Will my PangoVet consultation call be recorded?

Your call will be recorded for quality and training purposes, and to allow our vets to review your pet’s history, to ensure they can send you the best personalised recommendations possible after the call.
