Handling Dangers & Precautions
There is a risk to humans from handling contaminated foods, especially if they have not washed their hands after coming into contact with the products or surfaces that have been exposed to these pet foods.
If you currently have this product, take immediate action:
- Do not feed it to your pets or any animals.
- Do not sell or donate the recalled bags.
- Return the food to where you bought it, or dispose of it safely so that children, pets, and wildlife cannot access it.
- After handling the food or its containers, wash and sanitize all pet food bowls, cups, storage bins, and your hands.
Salmonella Poisoning & Health Risks
Many dogs are asymptomatic (show no symptoms) and are just carriers. Symptomatic illness is more common in puppies, seniors, and dogs with weakened immune systems.
Symptoms in Dogs
Common:
- Acute diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, weakness, or depression, decreased appetite, fever, dehydration, swollen lymph nodes
Severe (Contact a Veterinarian Immediately):
- Persistent fever, shock or collapse, signs of septicemia (bacteria spreading to the bloodstream), uncontrolled weight loss or blood loss, prolonged diarrhea (lasting more than 3-4 weeks)
Can Humans Contract Salmonella From Dogs?
Salmonella is a zoonotic disease, meaning it can be transmitted between animals and people. Dogs can carry and shed the bacteria, sometimes without showing any symptoms themselves.
Humans who’ve contracted Salmonella may experience:
- Diarrhea, stomach cramps or pain, fever, nausea, vomiting, headache, chills, high fever, Diarrhea or vomiting that lasts more than 3 days
If you show signs of infection after contact with recalled products or a pet that has consumed them, contact your healthcare provider.
Return the product: Take the recalled food back to your retailer for a refund.
