Does Pet Assure Cover X-Rays, MRIs, or Other Imaging? A Complete Guide

Patellar Luxation dog Xray

Pet Assure isn’t your average pet insurance agency. In fact, it’s not a pet insurance agency at all. Located in Lakewood, New Jersey, Pet Assure is a pet discount service for veterinary services. You could save money with this company if you can’t afford traditional pet insurance.

The best part is that Pet Assure covers almost everything, from surgery and broken bones to bloodwork and imaging. So, if your dog needs an x-ray or MRI, Pet Assure will cover it.

Of course, there are always drawbacks to any company. In this post, we’re helping you decide if Pet Assure is worth it.

How Is Pet Assure Different From Other Pet Insurance Companies?

Pet Assure is different from standard pet insurance. For instance, there are no deductibles, claims, or exclusions, meaning they’ll cover pre-existing conditions. There are no payout limits or age restrictions, so it doesn’t matter how old your dog is or how much you spend on veterinary care. If you have an exotic pet, Pet Assure will cover it, too. It sort of seems too good to be true. That’s because there are some drawbacks.

For starters, Pet Assure is only offered as an employee benefit and doesn’t work everywhere. You have to stay within Pet Assure’s chosen veterinary network instead of going to the veterinarian of your choice.

The biggest downside to Pet Assure is the discount. You only receive a 25% discount on veterinary services compared to the 70%, 80%, or 90% reimbursement rates offered by other pet insurance companies.

Even so, Pet Assure works for some people. If you’re unsure if it’s a good option for you and your pet, let’s go over what the company does and doesn’t cover.

What Pet Assure DOES Cover

You’ll be happy to know that Pet Assure covers everything as long as services are performed at a qualifying veterinary office. Here are some of the many procedures covered through Pet Assure:

  • Wellness visits & vaccines
  • Sick visits
  • Dental cleanings & exams
  • Diabetes management
  • Spays & Neuters
  • Wound care & repair
  • Bloodwork
  • Imaging (X-rays, ultrasounds, MRIs)
  • Pregnancy
  • Hospitalization
  • Surgery
  • Prescriptions
  • Cancer treatment
  • Orthopedic illness & injury

Pet Assure will also cover hereditary and congenital conditions like blindness and hip dysplasia. They don’t offer an accident-only plan but cover so much that it’s unnecessary.

What Pet Assure Doesn’t Cover

As far as ailments go, Pet Assure will cover anything. However, they’ll only cover 25% of the total cost, so you’ll still walk away with a hefty medical bill.

In addition, they don’t cover outsourced veterinary care. So, you’re out of luck if your veterinarian wants your dog to visit a specialist outside of Pet Assure’s network.

Is Pet Assure Worth It?

Pet Assure doesn’t do much to guard you against high veterinary expenses. You still have to pay out of pocket and wait for reimbursement, which is far less than standard pet insurance reimbursements. So, if you have a $1,000 veterinary bill, you still have to pay $750. On top of that, your pet can’t see a specialist outside the Pet Assure network, even if it’s what your veterinarian recommends.

The other downside is the discount card. Pet Assurance gives you a discount card to show your veterinarian when your pet receives medical care. Unfortunately, you can’t receive a discount or submit a claim if you forget the card.

With all this said, Pet Assure is worth it in some cases. Suppose you have a pregnant pet or a pet with pre-existing conditions. If your employer offers Pet Assure, the discount is worth a try.

Conclusion

Pet Assure may not be a one-size-fits-all kind of pet insurance. Still, it’s nice to know that they’ll cover pre-existing conditions, pregnancy, and other services like imaging. You can always compliment Pet Assure with pet insurance if you want. After all, your pet should have at least some veterinary care rather than none.
